KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has advised Malaysians to remain calm but vigilant amid growing concerns over potential cyberattacks.
He said the government had decided to inform the public openly about the situation rather than remain silent, as some countries had reportedly done to avoid causing panic.
“Some countries have seen growing anxiety among their residents, with some beginning to stockpile or purchase food supplies. Therefore, we believe it is better to make this known and disclose it in the Dewan Rakyat so that the people are informed.
“Do not panic. All government departments and agencies are working daily to ensure that supplies of medicines, food and other essential items are sufficient.
“Importantly, cybersecurity, digital matters and technology-related issues are also being monitored,” he said in response to a supplementary question from Datuk Rosol Wahid (PN-Hulu Terengganu) in the Dewan Rakyat.
Rosol had asked what advice Anwar had for the public amid growing concerns over the situation.
Anwar said the National Cyber Security Agency had participated in discussions and coordination under the National Security Council during a meeting yesterday.
On his message to the public, he said Malaysians should continue with their daily activities while remaining alert to developments.
“In other words, carry on as usual, but remain vigilant,” he said.
He also advised members of the public to immediately report any suspected intrusion or disruption involving digital systems and technology.
“I believe that panicking would weaken our strength,” he said.
Anwar said some countries were holding emergency meetings to address the situation. However, Malaysia had not reached that stage following discussions held yesterday.
He said it had been decided at yesterday’s meeting that he would convene an emergency cabinet meeting without waiting for the scheduled Friday meeting if the situation became urgent.
“We are monitoring the situation on a daily basis,” he said.
