PETALING JAYA: CelcomDigi Bhd has reduced its operational and purchased-electricity emissions by 3.95 per cent between 2024 and 2025 as it stepped up energy efficiency measures across its telecommunications network.
The company also recorded a 30 per cent reduction in carbon emissions per terabyte of data consumed between 2023 and 2025, despite growing demand for data services.
CelcomDigi said more than 15,000 network sites are equipped with energy-saving features as part of its five-year environmental, social and governance (ESG) roadmap.
Its head of sustainability Philip Ling said the company expects further reductions in carbon emissions through the adoption of energy-efficient technologies, including artificial intelligence, across its network infrastructure.
“One of our biggest initiatives this year has been improving energy efficiency, particularly through the use of AI in our networks.
“Our network towers can now enter different sleep modes, including micro-sleep and hibernation, to reduce energy consumption.
“We expect to see further reductions in carbon emissions. From last year to this year, we have achieved a 3.95 per cent reduction, and we hope to maintain this downward trend every year,” he told reporters after CelcomDigi’s Responsible Business Day 2026.
Beyond environmental sustainability, Ling said the company has also made progress in digital safety, supply chain sustainability and governance under its ESG roadmap.
CelcomDigi currently flags about 260 million suspected scam calls and blocks 22 million SMS messages monthly, while its Online Safety IRL 2.0 initiative has recorded 22.3 million views.
On supply chain sustainability, the company is on track to meet its annual commitments of 25,000 supplier training hours and 800 supplier inspections to strengthen responsible business practices.
Ling said CelcomDigi has also established a Responsible AI Governance Framework to strengthen transparency, accountability and data protection across its operations and services.
“It is an ongoing journey, again, aligned very much to where the government and regulators are guiding us,” he said.
