KUALA LUMPUR: Beluran member of parliament (MP) Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee has warned against using constituency allocations as a political weapon to secure support from certain parties.
He said allocations should be distributed fairly to all elected representatives, regardless of party.
“The government cannot use power, influence and the strength of its majority to use allocations as a political weapon. If that is happening, it must stop,” he said.
Speaking during the committee-stage debate on the 2027 Budget in the Dewan Rakyat, Kiandee said a law on equal allocations to all MPs should be tabled in Parliament, rather than leaving distribution to the prime minister’s discretion.
He said a confidence and supply agreement (CSA) was generally used by a government without a sufficient majority to pass legislation requiring the support of two-thirds of MPs, citing the government led by then prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as an example.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said on Oct 30 that allocations for opposition MPs who signed the CSA would be channelled after Parliament passed the Supply Bill 2027.
The agreement was signed on Oct 29 by 13 opposition MPs: six from Bersatu, Muda-Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and six independent MPs. They pledged to support the 2027 Budget and proposed institutional reforms in return for constituency development allocations equal to those received by government MPs.
