KUALA KRAI: Teachers and pupils of SJKT Ladang Pasir Gajah here have brought festive cheer to their school through the colourful tradition of kolam-making ahead of Deepavali.
They began creating traditional kolam and pulli kolam designs yesterday, transforming the school into a vibrant display of colours and creativity ahead of the Festival of Lights.
Tamil language and Mathematics teacher Subashini Satasilan, who has been teaching at the school for 12 years, said the activity had become an annual Deepavali tradition.
She said it gave pupils an opportunity to appreciate the cultural significance of the festival while working together to create intricate designs.
“We spent nearly RM50 on materials, including rice and coloured powder, to create the traditional designs.
“The activity also encourages teamwork, creativity and a sense of belonging among pupils while keeping our cultural heritage alive among the younger generation,” she said.
Subashini said the annual activity was more than just festive decoration, as it reflected the spirit of togetherness and joy among the school community.
“Kolam-making is a beautiful tradition that allows our pupils to appreciate their cultural heritage while learning to work together.
“It is heartwarming to see them taking part enthusiastically and using their creativity to produce the designs,” she said.
She added that the activity also introduced pupils to the traditional art of kolam-making, which is practised during Deepavali as a symbol of prosperity and positivity, as well as to welcome guests.
