#NSTviral: SIA flight’s tricky Perth landing attempt draws praise online

KUALA LUMPUR: A Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight aborted its landing attempt at Perth Airport due to strong winds before landing safely on its second attempt on Oct 31.

A video posted on Facebook by Chris Perry showed flight SQ213, travelling from Singapore to Perth, tilting sharply to the right as it approached the runway, with its right wing appearing close to the ground, before climbing away.

Perry, whose sister was on board, said strong winds had forced the aircraft to “go round again”, adding that the second landing attempt was successful.

SIA, responding to queries from AsiaOne, confirmed that the aircraft encountered strong winds during its approach, prompting the pilots to perform a go-around.

The airline said the Airbus A350-900 landed safely at 12.30pm local time before taxiing to the gate.

“The safety of our customers and crew is SIA’s top priority,” it said.

The incident drew praise on social media, with users commending the pilots for handling the difficult approach.

Facebook user Sampath Gur said the incident “must have been pretty frightening for many on board”, but praised SIA for being “known for choosing and training the best of the best”.

Another user, Sam Howard, said the pilots “held that very well”, commending their handling of the situation.

A go-around is a standard aviation safety procedure in which pilots discontinue a landing approach and climb away before making another attempt when conditions are unsuitable.

Perth Airport wind data showed winds of 32kph, with gusts reaching 43kph, around the time the aircraft landed.
