Petronas urged to continue as Malaysian GP title sponsor

SEPANG: Sepang International Circuit (SIC) is hoping Petronas will continue in their role as the Malaysian Grand Prix’s title sponsor until 2031.

It is understood that Petronas’ current deal with MotoGP, which started in 2022, is set to conclude this year.

SIC had earlier this year signed a new deal with MotoGP to host the race here until 2031.

SIC chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif hopes Petronas will continue as title sponsor until 2031, in line with the new hosting contract.

“If possible we want the (title) sponsorship contract to be aligned with our new contract with Dorna (MotoGP rights holders), which runs for five years until 2031,” said Shafriman on Friday.

“We hope Petronas will continue with us for the future. They are a big brand which has become synonymous with MotoGP.

“So far we have not heard any developments regarding this. We will leave it to Petronas and Dorna to discuss in detail.

“Petronas will have the final say but of course we are hoping for a positive outcome.”

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had on Thursday expressed his desire to see Petronas continue as Malaysian GP title sponsor.

Zahid said he had met with MotoGP chief executive officer Carmelo Ezpeleta recently, who also hopes Petronas will remain as title sponsor of the race.
