Pressure on Israel must go beyond proposed resolutions, says Zahid

ISTANBUL: The international community must take legal action against Israel to stop its military operations in Gaza, southern Lebanon and Syria.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said pressure on Israel must go beyond proposed resolutions and translate into concrete action to ensure it respects and complies with previously agreed ceasefires.

“Despite the change of leadership in Israel after the recent election, we find that, in terms of policy (on the ceasefire), it may not change.

“The involvement of the international community is needed to increase pressure on Israel, including through legal action and other measures, particularly among countries neighbouring it,” he said in a press conference after a roundtable discussion with the Foundation for Political, Economic and Social Research (Seta) here.

The 11-member Seta delegation was led by its coordinator, Prof Nebi Mis, and included its foreign policy studies director, Prof Murat Yesiltas, and publications director Ebrar Uzumcu.

Zahid, who is also Umno president, said the party plans to collaborate with Seta on research through the Abdullah Badawi Research Institute to strengthen knowledge-sharing between Malaysia and Türkiye.

He said the cooperation could include the exchange of research materials produced by both institutions, while Seta also has ties with the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia.

Zahid said the sharing of expertise and research findings is expected to benefit both countries, particularly in understanding regional and global geopolitical and socioeconomic developments.

Seta is an independent, non-profit think tank that conducts research on political, economic and social issues in Türkiye and globally, covering foreign policy, security, economics, society, energy and technology.

The discussion was part of Zahid’s four-day visit to Türkiye from Nov 5 to 8 for the two-day TRT World Forum 2026 at the Istanbul Congress Centre, which began yesterday.
