RM2.69b Penang LRT extension to boost island-mainland connectivity

GEORGE TOWN: The RM2.69 billion contract for the Mutiara Line light rail transit (LRT) extension to Penang Sentral marks a major step towards strengthening connectivity between Penang island and the mainland.

The Civil Main Contract 2 (CMC2), awarded by Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp), covers the design and construction of the extended LRT alignment from Jalan Macallum on the island to Penang Sentral in Butterworth.

A joint venture comprising China Communications Construction Company, TRC Construction and Ufuk Semarak will undertake the design and construction of the estimated 5.5km alignment linking Macallum on Penang island to Penang Sentral on the mainland.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow described the development as another significant milestone in realising Penang’s long-term vision of an integrated, efficient and sustainable public transport network.

He said the extension would strengthen transport connectivity between Penang island and Seberang Prai, improving accessibility and movement between the two parts of the state.

“We are confident that this strategic investment will not only enhance public transport facilities and travel efficiency but also spur economic growth, unlock further development opportunities and contribute towards a more connected, competitive and sustainable Penang,” he said today.

Chow said the state government looked forward to maintaining close cooperation with MRT Corp and the appointed contractors to ensure the project was implemented smoothly and completed according to the stipulated schedule.

“The state government remains committed to providing the necessary coordination and support to facilitate the delivery of this critical infrastructure project for the benefit of Penangites.

“We also look forward to the commencement of the Mutiara Line LRT operations, which is targeted for the end of 2031,” he added.

The extension is expected to play a pivotal role in improving cross-channel public transport connectivity while supporting Penang’s broader aspirations for sustainable urban mobility and long-term economic development.
