KUALA LUMPUR: After nearly three decades of touching the hearts of Malaysians, composer Datuk Wah Idris hopes to see Standing in the Eyes of the World given official recognition as a special national song.
The 69-year-old composer believes the piece—made famous by rock icon Ella—holds a unique place in the nation’s musical heritage.
He feels it deserves to be played regularly at official state events and government ceremonies.
Wah added that the song has a rare ability to unite Malaysians of all backgrounds while carrying the country’s message to the global stage.
Because of this, he hopes the relevant authorities will look into giving the track formal national status.
“We must feel proud that we have one solid, neutral song that can represent or elevate Malaysians on the global stage,” he told Bernama yesterday.
Looking back on how the song came to be, Wah explained that he originally wrote it to showcase Malaysia to the world during the 1998 Commonwealth Games.
He deliberately chose universal lyrics rather than a pure sports theme, aiming to inspire confidence in anyone listening.
That blend of melody and lyrics helped the song take on a life of its own long after the Games ended.
Wah sees this lasting popularity as proof that the track can endure as a timeless piece loved by all generations.
Its global appeal was highlighted in 2020, when the United States Embassy in Malaysia selected a newly reimagined version of the song to mark American Independence Day on July 4.
