KUALA LUMPUR: A flash flood inundated a house in Lorong Cempaka, Kampung Melayu Subang, yesterday, with floodwaters rising to a depth of one metre in less than an hour.
Resident Hazwan Zailan, 40, said the water began overflowing near his home around 3.40pm before reaching the one-metre mark by 4pm.
He said only his parents, Zailan Sulaiman and Norlina Sujaie, were at home when the flooding occurred, while he was at work and his wife and child were at his in-laws’ house.
“Many electrical appliances and furniture were damaged in the flooding,” he said.
Hazwan said the area was prone to flash floods whenever heavy rain continued for several hours, with flooding occurring at least twice a year on average.
“This is the third time it has flooded this year. The first was early this year, followed by another last month and yesterday.
“I believe the existing drainage system cannot cope with the development surrounding Kampung Melayu Subang, causing the area to experience frequent flash floods,” he said.
He called on the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) to work together to resolve the recurring problem.
“We want the relevant authorities to take proactive measures to prevent the same problem from happening repeatedly.
“They should not only come to the ground when flash floods occur and inspect the drains, ditches or rivers after the damage has been done,” he said.
Media reports said more than 500 houses were affected by flooding following heavy rain in several areas around Sungai Buloh, particularly Kampung Melayu Subang, yesterday.
Meanwhile, Sungai Buloh MP Datuk Seri R. Ramanan said affected residents had been evacuated to a temporary relief centre (PPS) at Dewan Siantan in Kampung Melayu Subang.
He said the centre would remain operational for as long as necessary to ensure affected residents received adequate shelter and assistance.
