Ab Rauf: Melaka voters, not political rivals, will judge state govt’s performance

MELAKA: Melaka Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh maintains that the state government’s performance should be measured and judged by the people, not its political rivals.

“I don’t know where he (Melaka Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Adly Zahari) obtained those findings, but I don’t want to comment because he was also once the Chief Minister, and I don’t want to comment on what he did during his tenure either.

“So, it is better for us to reflect on ourselves and what we have done for the people. I believe the people of Melaka know what we have done. The only person who doesn’t know is him,” he said during a visit to the BN operations room for the Telok Mas state constituency here today.

Earlier, Adly had questioned the performance of the BN-led Melaka government despite securing a strong mandate by winning 21 of the 28 seats in the previous state election.

Adly said BN should explain its achievements during its term in office instead of merely asking voters to continue placing their trust in the administration without addressing their grievances.

He said the mandate, which gave BN nearly 75 per cent of the state seats, should have translated into solutions to the people’s problems, particularly those involving housing, welfare and employment opportunities.

He also claimed that recurring floods, drainage systems, street lighting and maintenance of public facilities, particularly Melaka Sentral, remained unresolved issues affecting the people.

Ab Rauf, who is the incumbent Bukit Katil assemblyman, said Adly should reflect on his own record.

“Let others engage in (dirty politics). We will focus on talking about what we have done for the people and what they have gained from our administration of the state over the past five years.

“I noticed that the overwhelming support shown by the people yesterday during nomination day, with thousands turning up, reflected strong enthusiasm for us to return to power,” he said.

Ab Rauf stressed that BN had started engaging with the people well before the election campaign and did not wait until the 14-day campaigning period to reach out to voters or make promises.
