BN to focus on candidates, policies in Melaka election

KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional will not resort to smear campaigns in the Melaka election, focusing instead on its candidates, service records, manifesto pledges and solutions for voters.

Umno information chief Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said voters should assess candidates based on their capabilities, experience and plans to take the state forward.

“We want to secure a mandate based on our own strengths, rather than by tearing others down. The people of Melaka deserve to make their choice based on facts, not slander or hatred,” she said in a statement.

Azalina said candidates, party workers and supporters should campaign fairly, comply with election rules and avoid provocations involving race, religion and royalty.

She also called on Umno’s information machinery, including its Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings, to strengthen digital campaigning, noting that 43.6 per cent of Melaka voters were aged between 21 and 40.

“Our communication approach must be more dynamic, creative and closer to young voters. Ensure that digital spaces are filled with accurate information, engaging content and factual, measured explanations,” she said.

“Do not be easily influenced by unusually high numbers of likes, comments or shares. Check the sources, examine the facts and think before sharing.”

Melaka’s election campaign began today following nominations, with 79 candidates vying for all 28 state seats.

Polling is set for Nov 14, following a 14-day campaign period, while early voting is scheduled for Nov 10.
