BYD and Gentari are exploring the deployment of ultra-fast EV charging infrastructure in Malaysia, including at Petronas stations and major highway corridors, as the Chinese automaker seeks to expand charging options for its vehicles.
BYD Malaysia and Gentari recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at BYD’s global headquarters in Shenzhen to explore bringing BYD flash charging technology to Malaysia, although a rollout timeline and investment details were not disclosed.
The technology is designed to deliver its fastest charging speeds to vehicles equipped with BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery.
The Denza Z9GT, one of the first models in Malaysia to support the system, can charge from 10-70 per cent in five minutes and to 97 per cent in nine minutes, according to BYD.
The Z9GT features a 122.49kWh battery and a 1,000-volt electrical architecture.
Existing BYD models can also use the charging infrastructure, but charging speeds will depend on each vehicle’s capabilities.
BYD Malaysia managing director Jacob Ma said the collaboration marked a step towards bringing the company’s next-generation charging technology to local customers.
As an initial step, the companies will focus on selected Denza luxury showrooms before exploring locations at Petronas stations, intercity routes and highway rest and service areas.
The partnership will also look at developing local capabilities, including training and upskilling technicians to support Malaysia’s growing EV ecosystem.
Separately, Denza Malaysia has introduced Fjord Green as a new exterior colour for the Z9GT, joining Rime Gold and Obsidian Black.
The company said more than 100 units of the model had been delivered in Malaysia since its launch.
Priced at RM358,800, the Z9GT produces 850kW, or 1,156PS, and can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 2.7 seconds.
