DAP says talk of replacing Loke as transport minister premature

KUALA LUMPUR: DAP has yet to discuss who it would nominate to replace Anthony Loke as transport minister once his resignation takes effect.

DAP vice-chairman Syahredzan Johan said such discussions were premature as Loke’s resignation had yet to take effect.

“For now, his resignation has not taken effect until Datuk Seri Najib sets foot in his house, so it is inappropriate to discuss who the replacement will be.

“Cabinet appointments are the prerogative of the prime minister. Of course, the prime minister will make a decision after discussions with the DAP secretary-general himself,” he said when contacted.

Previously, Loke announced that he would step down as transport minister once Najib was released from prison to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.

He said the decision was in line with DAP’s stance against placing Najib under house arrest.

His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, granted Najib a conditional royal pardon on Sept 18, allowing him to serve the remainder of his SRC sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to payment of the RM50 million fine.

Yesterday, Najib’s legal team paid the RM50 million fine. Later in the day, Loke said his resignation would take effect once Najib set foot in his house.
