BUKIT MERTAJAM: Several residential areas in Seberang Prai Tengah were inundated following a continuous downpour that lashed the district late this afternoon.
The affected areas include Seberang Jaya, Permatang Rawa, Tanah Liat, Mengkuang Titi and Jalan Baharu.
The Civil Defence Force (APM), which serves as the District Disaster Management Committee (JPBD) Secretariat, said response teams were deployed shortly after heavy rain began around 4.30pm.
“Community agents were activated to monitor the ground, and by 6.15pm, we received reports of drainage overflow and fallen trees in Seberang Jaya, with water entering several homes.
“However, the situation remains under control,” it said.
At 7.30pm, authorities detected rising water levels in Mengkuang Titi.
“The Social Welfare Department is on standby should any evacuation become necessary, but as of 8pm, no temporary relief centres have been opened,” it said.
Agencies involved in ongoing monitoring operations include the district office, police, Fire and Rescue Department, Drainage and Irrigation Department, and local community leaders.
