DEEPAVALI celebrations are never complete for private sector worker P. Ravi without festive treats from Kampung Kacang Putih in Buntong here.

While this means travelling more than 200km from Kuala Lumpur to get those “kacang putih Buntong”, the 56-year-old says he does not mind the journey; in fact, it has become an annual routine.

“I leave Kuala Lumpur about 7.30am and it takes more than two hours to get here. This place has been my family’s choice for the past six years.

“We usually go there a week before the festival and among the treats we serve guests are mixed murukku, plain murukku and tapioca chips.”

The Melaka-born Ravi will set aside between RM500 and RM1,000 to buy the “reasonably priced” snacks from several shops.

“I also gift them to relatives, neighbours and colleagues.”

Civil servant K. Gaayathri, 30, said the “kacang putih Buntong” were a must-have for her guests during Deepavali.

“That is why I never forget to get them in Buntong. Deepavali celebrations just do not feel complete without such snacks being served to guests,” she said.

Shop manager S. Sathis Kumar said demand for snacks would increase by 60 per cent during the festive season.

“Among our most popular products are spicy mixed murukku, kuih loyang, round murukku and kuih batu, as well as various types of sweets and ladoo,” he said. — BERNAMA
