Landslide closes Jalan Rawang-Kuala Selangor in Gombak

SHAH ALAM: Jalan Rawang-Kuala Selangor (B27) at Section 9.90 in Gombak has been closed to all vehicles following a landslide that damaged part of the road structure last night.

The incident was reported about 11pm, involving failures of both the upper and lower slopes, which caused part of the road structure to collapse.

The Selangor Public Works Department (PWD) said the landslide also brought down trees, blocking the entire road.

In a statement, it said the road closure was implemented by the Gombak District PWD, while information on alternative routes was shared through the Facebook pages of PWD Selangor and Gombak this morning.

“The incident is believed to have been caused by heavy rain, which led to a large amount of rainwater infiltrating the ground, increasing soil saturation and pore water pressure on the slopes.

“This caused slope instability and soil movement, resulting in the collapse and damage to part of the road structure,” it said.

PWD Selangor said further investigations and technical assessments were under way to determine the actual cause of the incident.

It said a Traffic Management Plan (TMP) had also been activated, including the installation of signs indicating the full road closure and diversion routes to ensure road users’ safety.

“Temporary tarpaulin sheets have also been installed on the affected roadside embankment and slope surfaces to prevent erosion and further landslides.

“Debris and fallen trees blocking the road following the upper slope failure are being cleared by the state road concessionaire.

“Continuous monitoring is being carried out by Gombak District PWD and the concessionaire to detect any active movement in the road structure and assess slope stability.

“Construction of a temporary diversion road in the affected area will be carried out to allow light vehicles to pass, subject to technical assessment and safety considerations, including the stability of the slopes,” it said.

PWD Selangor said an announcement on the road’s reopening would only be made after technical assessments confirmed that the landslide area was safe and the diversion road was suitable for light vehicles.

Road users have been advised to follow all traffic signs and diversion instructions for their safety.
