Melaka polls: Bersama candidate claims party flags vandalised, one set ablaze

MELAKA: A Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama) candidate in Paya Rumput has claimed that his party’s flags were vandalised, with one set on fire.

Abdul Rashid Abu Bakar said party campaign workers discovered the damage between 4am and 7am yesterday.

He said an inspection near the Jalan Bukit Rambai bridge found several flagpoles broken and one flag burnt.

“Following the incident, Bersama urges the police to conduct a thorough investigation, including reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the surrounding area.

“Firm action must be taken against any party or individual responsible for this act of vandalism to prevent a recurrence,” he said after lodging a police report at the Batu Berendam police station today.

He urged all parties contesting the Melaka state election to campaign responsibly, respect the law and uphold public safety and order.

“Sabotage and excessive provocation should have no place in a democratic process.

“Instead, campaigns should be conducted peacefully and with integrity,” he said.

Meanwhile, Melaka police, when contacted, said they would issue a statement on the incident.
