Najib fundraising drive still short of target, says Umno sec-gen

ALOR GAJAH: Public donations to help former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak continue to come in, although the fundraising drive has yet to reach its target to cover his fine.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said daily collections averaged between RM5,000 and RM10,000.

He said contributions had come from people across all walks of life, including those who donated as little as RM1, RM5 and RM10.

“The momentum is good. I have observed that daily contributions from the public average between RM5,000 and RM10,000, including donations as small as RM10, RM5 and even RM1.

“This is what we call crowdfunding, where members of the public contribute to help Najib,” he said.

He was speaking to reporters after attending the Program Santai Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki bersama pengundi at the Durian Tunggal state constituency operations room in Taman Angkasa Nuri here today.

Also present were BN candidate for the Durian Tunggal seat Datuk Dr Mustafa Musa and former assemblyman Datuk Zahari Khalil.

Asyraf Wajdi said the fundraising effort was still ongoing, but the total amount collected had yet to be disclosed as the party wanted to wait for an appropriate time to announce it.

“God willing, I am confident, but I want to keep an element of surprise. We will make the announcement when the time comes,” he said.

On political opponents continuing to raise Najib’s name during the Melaka election campaign, Asyraf Wajdi said he believed the public still remembered the former prime minister’s administration, particularly its impact on people’s lives and the country’s economy.

It was previously reported that Najib had yet to pay the RM50 million fine, based on the latest information from the Attorney-General’s Chambers (A-GC).

Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said no specific deadline had been set for payment of the fine and confirmed that Najib would have to remain in prison until it was paid.
