KUALA LUMPUR: Police have removed the cordon at the Jalan Langgak Duta junction near Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s residence this evening.
Two policemen were seen removing the yellow police tape shortly after the rain stopped about 7pm.
Members of the press, some of whom had been stationed in the area since morning awaiting developments on Najib’s possible return home, also began leaving the scene.
The removal of the cordon came about an hour after the Attorney-General’s Chambers (A-GC) called for a temporary suspension of Najib’s house arrest pending clarification on the interpretation of his conditional royal pardon.
The A-GC said Najib’s existing detention status should be maintained until the legal issues surrounding the pardon and the High Court’s order for his release were resolved.
The statement came hours after Umno settled Najib’s RM50 million fine and the High Court issued an Order of Discharge on Payment of Fine, directing his immediate release while requiring him to serve the remainder of his SRC International prison sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028. (
The A-GC said two possible interpretations had emerged from the conditional pardon granted by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, on Sept 18.
Under the first interpretation, payment of the RM50 million fine would satisfy only the fine component of Najib’s sentence, while his prison term would remain in force until Aug 23, 2028.
In this scenario, house arrest would serve as an alternative arrangement for Najib to complete his remaining prison sentence rather than signify its termination.
The second interpretation suggests that payment of the fine could result in the entire SRC International sentence, including the prison term, being considered completed.
The A-GC said the matter also involved determining the legal effect of the High Court’s Order of Discharge on Payment of Fine issued today.
