KAJANG: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who underwent a medical examination at Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) this evening, returned to Kajang Prison here tonight.
The grey Proton X70 sports utility vehicle (SUV) carrying the former Pekan member of parliament arrived at the prison complex at 7.15pm, accompanied by Malaysian Prisons Department escort vehicles.
Earlier today, the media reported that the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) had called for the implementation of Najib’s house arrest to be temporarily deferred pending further clarification on the interpretation of the Conditional Pardon Order granted by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim.
In a statement, the A-GC said the deferral followed legal questions surrounding the interpretation of the order dated Sept 18, 2026, particularly the implications of the RM50 million fine payment on the remainder of Najib’s prison sentence in the SRC International case.
Najib, 73, was earlier reported to have undergone a medical examination at HKL after the vehicle carrying him was seen leaving the Kajang Prison complex this evening.
A source said Najib returned to prison after completing the examination as several matters needed to be settled there before any subsequent movement.
Najib was reported to have settled the RM50 million fine imposed on him in the SRC International Sdn Bhd funds misappropriation case today. This was confirmed by his lawyer, Muhammad Farhan Shafee.
On Sept 18, Najib received a conditional pardon from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.
Najib was sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined RM210 million after the Kuala Lumpur High Court found him guilty on July 28, 2020, of seven charges involving the misappropriation of RM42 million belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd.
On Aug 23, 2022, the Federal Court dismissed Najib’s final appeal and upheld his conviction and sentence. He began serving his prison term at Kajang Prison on the same day.
Najib subsequently submitted a pardon petition to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Sept 2, 2022. The application was considered at a Pardons Board meeting on Jan 29, 2024.
