‘Not true’: Asyraf rubbishes claim Najib ready to pay RM50mil fine

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has denied reports that Datuk Seri Najib Razak is ready to pay the RM50 million fine to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest.

“Not true,” he told the New Straits Times when asked about the reports.

Earlier, it was reported that Najib was set to pay the RM50 million fine imposed on him to enable him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest.

A source said the fine would be paid by a representative of Najib at the Kuala Lumpur courts complex today.

His lawyers, however, denied receiving such instructions.

On Sept 18, the former Pekan member of parliament received a conditional pardon from the King of Malaysia, Sultan Ibrahim, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.

Najib, 73, was sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined RM210 million after being found guilty by the Kuala Lumpur High Court on July 28, 2020, on seven charges involving the misappropriation of RM42 million in funds belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd.
