Penang police probe viral video alleging patrol officers’ misconduct

GEORGE TOWN: Police have launched an investigation into a viral video alleging misconduct by patrol officers during an enforcement operation at Puncak Erskine in Tanjung Tokong.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad said police became aware of the footage circulating on social media today.

The video, showing mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) personnel on duty at Jalan Fettes, drew public attention after being shared by several Facebook accounts, including “Zippygiraffe43” and “M Riza Ni”.

“A police report has been lodged by the personnel involved, denying any corrupt misconduct during the inspection,” he said in a statement.

Rozak said police were investigating the allegations under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

“At the same time, we will also investigate the personnel’s compliance with standard operating procedures and internal disciplinary conduct,” he said.

He advised the public against circulating the recording or speculating about the incident, saying this could interfere with investigations.
