KUALA LUMPUR: National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loan arrears involving 1.16 million borrowers have reached RM10.7 billion as of Aug 31.
The Higher Education Ministry said PTPTN was taking various measures to ensure the long-term sustainability of its financing model, including strengthening loan management and improving repayment collection.
It said loan terms and conditions would be refined to better target financing to those in need, based on PTPTN’s financial capacity.
“PTPTN will also improve the effectiveness and efficiency of loan repayment collection through enforcement measures and strategic cooperation with government agencies and corporations,” it said in a written parliamentary reply today.
The ministry was responding to Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias (BN-Jelebu) regarding the latest amount owed by PTPTN borrowers and measures being taken to improve loan repayments.
It said, however, it remained mindful of borrowers who were genuinely struggling to repay their loans.
It said such borrowers were encouraged to come forward for consultation and restructure their repayments according to their financial capacity, or apply for a repayment deferment subject to the flexibility allowed by PTPTN.
