‘Sang Kancil’ musical brings Khir Rahman back to the stage

ACTOR and director Khir Rahman is set to return to his roots, taking to the stage at Istana Budaya next month in the children’s musical ‘Pengembaraan Sang Kancil’.

This marks the 53-year-old artiste’s first theatre show in nearly 10 years, following his performance in ‘Semerah Padi’.

Khir will play Raja Rimba (King of the Jungle) in the three-day production, which opens on Nov 13 at Panggung Sari.

Reflecting on the opportunity, Khir has expressed delight at his comeback in a children’s musical.

“Those who have followed my journey from the beginning know that my origins lie in theatre. Stage productions, festivals, and competitions have been part of my life since I was young,” Khir told Bernama recently.

“Returning to the stage through a children’s play feels like a true homecoming. It is right up my alley, especially since I previously worked on productions like Uda dan Dara.”

Khir said working alongside child actors has brought him immense joy, praising their dedication and early head start in the performing arts.

Among the young cast is child actor Ahmad Zaid Ahmad Zaha, who plays the lead role of Sang Kancil.

“Even though Sang Kancil is small, he is brave. That’s a huge motivation for me because I’m quite small compared to others at school. I want to be like Sang Kancil — small, but confident enough to speak up,” said the Year 6 pupil.

‘Pengembaraan Sang Kancil’ tells the story of the clever mousedeer as he uses his quick wits to help oppressed animals and protect his family from the dangerous Taring.

Istana Budaya production director Hanida Mohamed Yusof described the show as a “Nusantara magic” concept, infusing regional folklore, live music, dance, and humour.

The production features 46 child actors and 16 original songs performed live by Orchestra Tradisional Malaysia and string players from the National Symphony Orchestra.

“We strongly believe that introducing the arts at an early age helps shape a lasting appreciation and love for culture and the arts among our children,” Hanida said.

Directed by Nawfal Zamri, ‘Pengembaraan Sang Kancil’ runs from Nov 13 to 15. Tickets are available via Istana Budaya’s social media platforms or by calling 03-4026 5555.
