#SHOWBIZ: Scarlett Johansson on her ‘Batman 2’ role: ‘It gave me existential angst’

LOS ANGELES: Scarlett Johansson might be used to superhero films, but her upcoming role in The Batman: Part II has brought a few unexpected challenges.

The actress, whose character in the Robert Pattinson-led sequel is still a secret, said the part pushed her out of her comfort zone and gave her “a lot of existential angst, for some reason”.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight while promoting her upcoming film Paper Tiger, Johansson admitted that she found it tricky to understand the character.

“It was very hard to figure out,” she said. “I don’t know why, whether it was just the role or it was just where I am in my life, but it was just hard to crack it. And that’s all I can say about it.”

Director Matt Reeves confirmed Johansson’s casting in May through a post on X, sharing a GIF of the actress looking into a car’s rear-view mirror from the 2013 film Under the Skin.

No details about her character were shared.

Johansson is one of several well-known faces joining the sequel, alongside Sebastian Stan and Brian Tyree Henry, whose roles are also being kept under wraps.

Production on the film is being led by Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, following Reeves having to temporarily step away from the project due to a personal matter.

Reeves directed the 2022 film The Batman, which introduced Pattinson as the Caped Crusader.

Reeves has previously mentioned that the sequel will place more focus on Bruce Wayne rather than concentrating mostly on his Batman persona.

“I never wanted to lose Robert Pattinson at the centre of these stories, and so that is really what we set our aim on,” he said in an earlier interview.
