Siblings seek firefighters’ help to rescue bedridden mother from rising floodwaters

SHAH ALAM: Three siblings had to seek assistance from the Fire and Rescue Department to evacuate their bedridden mother after floodwaters rose rapidly to waist level at Kampung Paya Jaras Hilir, Sungai Buloh, early today.

Nur Nazihah Asyiqin Mohd Said, 27, said they had not expected the water to rise so quickly and had to call the Fire and Rescue Department to help move their 60-year-old mother to safety.

She said their house was in a flood-prone area, but the water usually rose gradually.

She said it started raining around 10pm yesterday as she returned from work, and she was initially not too concerned until the downpour intensified around midnight.

“At 2am, my younger sibling woke me up and said water was rushing into the house.

“We initially thought it would not rise too high, but by 3am, it had reached my waist.

“As I was worried about my mother, who is bedridden following a stroke, I asked my brother to seek help to get her to safety.

“The fire and rescue team arrived at 3.30am and took us to the Sinar Pagi temporary relief centre,” she said when contacted today.

Nur Nazihah Asyiqin said she had lived in the house with her mother, brother and younger brother for 25 years, and flooding was not new to them.

She said their house was also flooded to waist level around April last year, damaging many of their belongings.

This time, however, they managed to salvage only a few items as the water rose too quickly. They also did not have time to save their mother’s medication.

Although floodwaters around their house have receded, she said the family had decided to remain at the relief centre for fear that the water could rise again if it rained.

“I was told that the Social Welfare Department would help us obtain medication for my mother.

“I briefly returned home to collect some clothes. Although the floodwaters had receded, we could not clean the house as we had to attend to my mother.

“What worries me most is the possibility of another flood, as I understand it may rain again this afternoon.

“Although my mother seems uncomfortable at the relief centre, we have no choice. Her safety is more important,” she said.
