Smart budgeting strategies strengthen financial resilience

LETTER: Bank Negara Malaysia’s decision to maintain the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) at 2.75 per cent provides some reassurance to Malaysian households, offering greater certainty in financial planning as families prepare for the year-end holidays.

For borrowers with floating-rate loans and financing, monthly repayments are likely to remain stable.

However, an unchanged OPR does not mean that living costs will remain unchanged. Prices of goods and services may continue rising even when national inflation remains relatively low.

As the year draws to a close, many families are planning their school holiday trips.

And, parents must prepare for the new school year beginning in January 2027. These overlapping expenses can place considerable pressure on household finances.

Thus, families should prioritise essential commitments before allocating money for holidays.

A good move is to set aside sufficient funds before deciding on their travel budgets, preventing financial difficulties when schools reopen.

Another good approach is for families to choose destinations that fit their budgets. Shorter trips or nearby attractions may offer equally meaningful experiences at lower costs.

Other approaches include exercising caution when using credit to finance seasonal spending and maintaining emergency savings.

A stable OPR, therefore, should be viewed as an opportunity to strengthen household financial resilience and not an invitation to borrow more or spend beyond one’s means.
