SMRT staff member sings ABC song to calm lost teen with special needs, helps reunite him with family

A 16-year-old with special needs who appeared lost and alone at Holland Village MRT station was reunited with his father about two hours later, after two SMRT staff members stepped in to help him.Station manager Mubarak Haziq and assistant station manager Hajjah Puteri Ruziah were alerted to the teenager by a commuter, according to a Facebook post by SMRT on Wednesday (Sept 30).The teenager appeared anxious and disoriented, prompting the staff to bring him to the station’s WeCare Room.Haziq and Puteri attended to him while trying to keep him comfortable.They helped to put plasters on blisters on his feet, and offered him soft toys and drinks.However, the teenager remained quiet.Puteri then decided to sing the ABC song to him in an attempt to calm him down. The teenager smiled in response.While Puteri stayed by his side, Haziq contacted SMRT’s Operations Control Centre and alerted colleagues across the rail network, as well as TransCom officers.A breakthrough came when Haziq spotted a social media post about a missing person, and realised that the teenager could be the person mentioned in the post.
