Tony Pua calls for audit of Umno’s RM50 million Najib fund

KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Negara Malaysia and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) have been urged to audit Umno’s RM50 million donation fund for former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Former Damansara member of parliament Tony Pua said the audit was needed to ensure that the money raised was legitimate and had not been laundered.

“More importantly, I call upon Bank Negara Malaysia and the MACC to audit the money trails going into Umno’s donation account for Najib, to make sure that all the funds raised were legitimate, and not laundered.

“Umno claimed to have successfully raised RM50 million to send Malaysia’s biggest crook, Najib Razak, back home for house arrest,” he said in a Facebook post today.

Pua said the money could have been used to help ordinary Malaysians, but Umno had instead chosen to “free” Najib.

“Umno colours shine very brightly,” he added.

He also called on Malaysians, regardless of race, religion or creed, to see what he described as Umno and Barisan Nasional’s true colours.

His remarks came after Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party had settled the RM50 million fine after the Najib Razak Solidarity Fund, launched in September, reached its target.

Najib has been in Kajang Prison since Aug 23, 2022, after being convicted of misappropriating RM42 million belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd.

He was sentenced to 12 years’ jail and fined RM210 million, which the Federal Territories Pardons Board reduced in January 2024 to six years and RM50 million.

On Sept 18, Najib was granted a further conditional pardon allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.

This was subject to payment of the RM50 million fine and compliance with other conditions.
