Umno Youth to lodge nationwide reports over delay in Najib’s house arrest

MELAKA: Umno Youth will lodge police reports over the delay in implementing the house arrest order involving former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Its chief, Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, said the reports, to be lodged at state and divisional levels, would enable the authorities to investigate whether there had been any breach of the law in implementing the royal decree and court order.

He said Umno Youth was also calling for the immediate implementation of the decree by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong allowing Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.

“Umno Youth calls for the immediate implementation of His Majesty’s decree and for Najib to be allowed to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.

“Any further proceedings, including a referral to the court, should not be used as a reason to delay the implementation of a decree that His Majesty has declared to be clear and unambiguous.

“As decreed by His Majesty, the power of pardon is a Royal Prerogative under Article 42 of the Federal Constitution, and its implementation must be respected in accordance with the position of the Constitutional Monarchy and the principle of the rule of law,” he said in a statement shared on his Facebook page.

The Attorney-General’s Chambers (A-GC) said today that seeking a court ruling on Najib’s house arrest did not override the King’s power to grant pardons.

It said the King’s constitutional authority to grant pardons and the courts’ power to interpret the legal effect of an order were separate matters.
