KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim does not agree with Umno’s decision to pay Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s RM50 million fine but says it is the party’s right to do so.
“If Umno wants to pay RM50 million, that is its decision. That is their business.
“Personally, I disagree because while we maintain a spirit of friendship (with Datuk Seri Najib and Umno) it should not give the impression that corruption involving billions of ringgit can simply be overlooked,” he told reporters after Friday prayers.
The settling of Najib’s RM50 million fine paves the way for him to serve the remainder of his jail sentence under house arrest.
Earlier today, Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki confirmed that the party had paid Najib’s RM50 million fine at the Kuala Lumpur High Court.
