Veteran Hong Kong actor Lau Siu Ming died at the age of 94 yesterday (Sept 2).Hong Kong media reported that his demise was confirmed by his actor friend Ding Yue, who said he died at 6pm.Siu Ming, who was affectionately known as Ming Sir, had been in declining health in his later years. He reportedly suffered from seven ailments and was wheelchair-bound, with his 93rd birthday spent in the hospital.He said about his condition previously: “I need to catch my breath even when speaking. If I mention five out of seven illnesses, it takes a long time.”His last public appearance was in October 2025 when he attended a reception hosted by Hong Kong’s culture and art communities in celebration of the 76th anniversary of the founding of People’s Republic of China. Siu Ming looked to be in good spirits then.He was one of the pioneers of Hong Kong’s dance industry and was awarded a scholarship to learn at the Classical Ballet Research Centre in France in the 1960s.He returned to Hong Kong in 1967 and worked as a dance choreographer and instructor before switching to acting, making his film debut in Tsui Hark’s The Butterfly Murders (1979).
