Wei Jie-Ee Yi build on big upset to reach last eight

KUALA LUMPUR: Chia Wei Jie-Teo Ee Yi continued their impressive Korea Open campaign by advancing to the men’s doubles quarter-finals in Yeosu on Thursday.

The world No. 39 overcame Taiwan’s world No. 38 He Zhi Wei-Huang Jui Hsuan 21-9, 21-19, securing their first Super 500 quarter-final appearance as a partnership.

The victory came two days after the independent pair stunned China’s world No. 11 Chen Bo Yang-Liu Yi in the opening round, their biggest scalp since joining forces in April.

Wei Jie-Ee Yi, whose previous best World Tour result together was a semi-final appearance at the Super 300 Macau Open in June, will next face either Japan’s fifth seeds Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi or Malaysian veteran Goh V Shem and his South Korean partner Choi Sol Gyu for a place in the semi-finals.
