KUALA LUMPUR: The Sekolah Sukan Malaysia Perlis (SSP) project, abandoned for 12 years, will finally be fully operational next year, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
In a post on his official Facebook account today, the prime minister said the operation of the institution marks the resolution of a crucial sports project delayed for years, benefiting the development of young national athletes.
He congratulated Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek and the Education Ministry for resolving the issue within two years.
“I still remember visiting Perlis in April 2025 when the then menteri besar, Mohd Shukri Ramli, raised the abandoned Sekolah Sukan Malaysia Perlis project, and I ordered an immediate resolution.
“God willing, SSP will be completed this year and operational next year.
“Abandoned for 12 years, Alhamdulillah, the Madani government resolved it in less than two years,” said Anwar, who is also finance minister and the Tambun member of parliament.
It was previously reported that Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah said the long-delayed SSP project was expected to be completed in January 2027, with physical progress then standing at about 60 per cent.
On April 27 last year, Anwar directed that the project, abandoned since 2013, be handed over to a capable government-linked company to ensure swift completion.
The SSP project involves the development of a specialised sports school complex originally slated for completion in 2014 following groundbreaking works a year earlier.
