Annual floods earn Masjid At-Taufiqiah ‘Masjid Banjir’ nickname

KUALA SELANGOR: Masjid At-Taufiqiah in Bandar Seri Coalfields has been hit by floods almost every year, earning it the nickname “Masjid Banjir” (Flood Mosque), says a mosque committee member.

Hasan Md Rasol, 62, said the latest incident began when his wife, Suriatie Mohd Senin, 50, alerted him at 7am today that water behind their house was rising rapidly.

He said he had just returned from performing Subuh prayers when he turned back to the mosque to alert the imam and other committee members.

“We immediately worked together to salvage the carpets in the prayer hall, portable loudspeakers, prayer mats, the Quran and other items. We also switched off the main power supply to prevent any untoward incidents.

“Once we had finished, floodwater surged into the mosque compound, carrying rubbish and mud,” he said when met.

Hasan said the mosque management had learned to prepare for floods after years of dealing with the problem.

“The last flood was early last year, but the water only reached the foyer.

“However, this is the second-worst incident since the major flood in December 2021,” he said.

He said repair costs following flood damage could run into tens of thousands of ringgit.

“For example, the electrical wiring can short-circuit when the mosque is flooded. The building structure can also be affected.

“Nevertheless, we are grateful for the many donations and the concern shown by people towards the problems faced by the mosque,” he said.

Hasan said the mosque management hoped the floodwater would recede soon so the place of worship could reopen.
