More than 17,000 compounds have been issued, with 2,000 offenders ordered by the courts to perform community service, since the anti-littering law took effect on Jan 1.
Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the enforcement measures were part of the government’s efforts to protect the environment.
“We must work together to ensure Malaysia remains clean so that all Malaysians can enjoy a good quality of life,” he said in reply to a question by Roslan Hashim (PN-Kulim-Bandar Baharu) in the Dewan Rakyat.
Nga said the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) shut down 3,600 illegal dumpsites last year and cleared more than 1,500 tonnes of rubbish.
“Over the past three years, we have successfully shut down more than 6,000 illegal dumping sites.”
He said those involved in illegal dumping faced up to five years’ imprisonment and a fine of RM100,000 upon conviction under the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007.
Nga said SWCorp equipped its officers with more than 100 motorcycles last year to strengthen enforcement activities.
