Motorcyclist killed, another injured in Sungai Petani trailer crash

SUNGAI PETANI: A man was killed and another seriously injured after the motorcycle they were riding brushed against each other before they fell and were run over by a trailer at Km96.2 of the North-South Expressway southbound last night.

Kuala Muda police chief assistant commissioner Hanyan Ramlan said the accident occurred at 12.20am, with Mohd Khairul A’zami Mohd Nazeri pronounced dead at the scene, while Muhammad Adib Zamri, both aged 23, was seriously injured.

He said preliminary investigations revealed that both Yamaha Y15ZR motorcycles were in the left lane before the riders were believed to have attempted to pull over beneath an overhead bridge to take shelter from the rain.

“As they tried to avoid another motorcycle parked under the overhead bridge, the two motorcycles sideswiped each other before hitting the side of a trailer in the same lane.

“Both riders fell beneath the trailer and were run over and dragged along the road,” he said in a statement today.

He said Adib had been admitted to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital for treatment, while Khairul A’zami’s post-mortem examination would be carried out there.

Hanyan said the 40-year-old trailer driver was uninjured and had tested negative in a urine screening test, adding that the case is classified under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
