PBB’s Karim does not rule out defending Asajaya in Sarawak polls

KUCHING: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) information chief Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has not ruled out defending his Asajaya seat in the coming Sarawak election.

The 66-year-old, who is also state tourism, creative industry and performing arts minister, said he believed the party might still need him given the responsibilities entrusted to him.

“So far, there has been no feedback telling me that I will be renominated or otherwise, but I can feel that I may still be needed.

“If not, there would surely be indications, or I would no longer be brought along for certain matters and would not be given specific responsibilities,” he said at a press conference for the Sarawak Expo 2026.

Karim, who has represented Asajaya since 2001, said any decision on whether he should continue serving or make way for new faces must take into account the wishes of the people and the party leadership.

He said he enjoyed serving Sarawak and that carrying out his duties had become “second nature” after more than 25 years in politics.

“However, we must also accept the fact that if we stay in office too long, those whom we want to bring forward will take longer to gain opportunities and experience,” he said.

Separately, Karim said Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) would not yield any of its seats to other parties, including those in the federal unity government.

He said GPS was prepared to contest against any party, including Pakatan Harapan, Perikatan Nasional or Pas, should they field candidates in those constituencies.
