Affordable books key to nurturing young readers in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Making books more affordable and accessible is key to encouraging children to develop reading habits, think critically and explore new ideas.

Sabah Chief Minister’s special officer Yee Tsai Yiew said access to books could help shape the next generation by encouraging children to question, imagine and broaden their understanding of the world.

“I believe most of us can remember a book that left a lasting impression on us, perhaps even changing the way we see the world.

“Perhaps that is where changing the world begins, by encouraging the next generation to pick up a book.

“When we encourage children to read, we encourage them to think, to question, to imagine and to discover what is possible,” she said at the launch of Big Bad Wolf Books at the Sabah International Convention Centre here.

Yee said the state government welcomed initiatives that supported education, lifelong learning and community development, and hoped similar efforts would reach more communities across Sabah.

She added that this year’s book sale coincided with the Big Sabah Sale 2026, bringing more visitors to Kota Kinabalu while supporting the local economy.

Big Bad Wolf Books Kota Kinabalu 2026, featuring more than one million books, runs until Nov 9.
