KUALA LUMPUR: Film producer and director Faisal Ishak has highlighted the vital role families play in shaping a child’s character, particularly when it comes to instilling proper conduct, attitudes, and discipline.
His comments come amidst recent calls for an immediate halt to television dramas and films that depict or promote a culture of bullying, following growing public concern over the issue among school students.
Speaking to Harian Metro recently, the 56-year-old Juvana director pointed out that the root of the problem often lies closer to home.
“Current issues regarding children’s behaviour, manners, and discipline often stem from the home environment—a situation further complicated by the pervasive influence of social media,” he said.
“The family is fundamental to character development, for it is at home that our children learn about manners, empathy, respect, and how to treat others.”
But Faisal noted that it would be unfair to lay the blame entirely on parents, given the complex pressures young people face today.
“We cannot place the blame solely on parents, as every child encounters different life experiences, peer pressures, and environmental influences,” he explained.
“While parents certainly need to stay informed about their children’s lives—such as who their friends are, what they watch, and how they use social media—mere monitoring is not enough.”
Instead, he urged parents to take an active, open approach to communication.
“We must also engage in conversation, listen to them, and provide guidance so they understand why certain actions are wrong.”
He added that children must learn that wrongdoings carry real consequences, which ultimately helps them reject bullying behaviours.
“Education is not merely about ensuring children fear punishment; rather, it is about helping them develop their own moral judgment so that they become mindful and cautious regarding their own behaviour,” Faisal stressed.
“In fact, if we want them to respect others and reject violence, we must set a good example ourselves and teach them how to resolve conflicts without resorting to force.”
